The Folk in Narratives: Dimensions and Representations

The folk traditions assist in expanding the horizon of the texts. Culturally coded texts have their own conceptual and performative dimensions as they articulate various themes and ideas. Folk is also used for counter discourses to challenge official/ dominant narratives. Moreover, folk traditions serve as a powerful symbolic tool to reclaim identity, mobilize the masses, drive resistance and foster unity. It often stems from and resides in our unconscious, shaped greatly by the psychological processes of sublimation, repression and implicit transmission. Furthermore, the folk tradition does not just stop at the imaginary, it brings the spectacle of our material conditions directly into view. The meaning of a text is also facilitated by the performance and here too the folk as a narrative strategy plays an effective role. Folk narratives effectively help both the narrator and the audience to participate in performance of the text.
